On Tuesday 18th October Conservative Cllr Tim Harris received unanimous cross-party support for his motion asking that Reading Borough Council assist with a £10,000 grant to enable the establishment of a local Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) support centre.
Cllr Tim Harris said. “As Reading Conservatives we were in no doubt that an LGBT centre would be a real benefit to our town's residents. To get it endorsed by every single councillor on Reading Borough Council was a pleasant surprise, and as a result we should see the centre up and running shortly.”
Leader of the Conservative Group, Cllr Andrew Cumpsty said “"For me, supporting and celebrating diversity is a mark of a decent and civilized society and by supporting this initiative, Reading is once again providing support and hope for all folk from the LGBT community."

The motion was titled Support Centre for LGBT Community
Cllr Tim Harris moved the motion and it was seconded by Cllr Jamie Chowdhary.
“This council believes that the residents of Reading would significantly benefit from a support centre in the town centre open at accessible times to provide specialist services such as health, relationship, employment and legal advice and to offer counselling and other services to the LGBT community.
This Council undertakes to provide genuine assistance with accommodation and £10k in start up costs for “Support U” to establish such a centre which once instigated should be self-financing and run by local LGBT community members.”
