Following the incident on Monday January 11th, I together with Rob Wilson MP raised a petition for a full safety investigation by Reading Borough Council (RBC). The response has been overwhelming with 1,000 + signatories on Change.org in just a few days. Additional comments posted by the public capture details of many previously unreported near misses and will be very helpful in the safety review.
Recognizing public concerns and the serious nature of this accident , I have agreed with RBC officers to short cut usual processes so the petition can be presented to the mid-February RBC meeting.
The incident and the petition have received significant media coverage, including a front page headline spread in Reading Chronicle, plus radio interviews on Radio Berkshire and Jazz FM. To extend the campaign, over a dozen retail outlets in Caversham are lending their support, with window posters and paper petition forms for signature. In discussion with retailers and the public it is heartwarming to see the community support we are generating.
Please join us in this worthwhile cause, so we can make crossing Prospect Street safer, if you have not done so already, please sign the petition on here or sign a paper copy at one of the following outlets in Prospect Street or Church Street, Caversham.
Retail Outlets - Zappas Hair Salon; JK Barbers; NEA (Nicholas Estate Agents); Perfection Nail Bar; Prince of Wales public house; Waltons; Dancia; Alto Lounge, Suprema
