Caversham Councillor Andrew Cumpsty has written to the CEO of the Nationwide Building Society to protest against the planned closure of the Caversham branch.
Subject: Nationwide - Caversham
Date: 15 Sep 2013 09:52:54 +0000
I have been the Councillor for Caversham Ward in Reading now for nearly ten years. Up until a couple of years ago, I was Leader of the Council in Reading.
The reason for writing to you is to express my profound disappointment that you are considering closing the Nationwide branch in Caversham and to make a plea to keep this valued business in our community open.
I should incidentally declare an interest, in that I have my mortgage with Nationwide, based at this branch.
I, like many of my residents, was convinced by your marketing that you are there for your customers and not shareholders and so put my trust in you. Caversham has many older residents who rely upon this important resource in the community and for them a trip to your 'nearest branch in Reading' is not a practical or affordable solution. It is a very vibrant centre, so with the right management of the branch would be a very successful branch for you.
I would therefore ask you and your team to reconsider your plans, as Nationwide is a very valued business in our community, as well as being well used. I once again saw your advertisement on the TV this morning, boasting that you are there for your customers and not shareholders. I would therefore ask that you live up to Nationwide's marketing and listen to our flourishing community.
We want you to do business in Caversham and trade successfully here. I am in London often with work and so would be delighted to meet with you and discuss Nationwide. I have met already with you a couple of years ago wearing a different hat (Chairman of the Enterprise Forum), but would very much value a meeting as soon as diaries allow.
Many thanks
Andrew
